Yesterday, my bestie (Christine Edwards) and I took a road trip to meet author John Acuff. What a phenomenal day it turned out to be. Besides chatting about writing and books and ideas for stories, we made it from Melbourne to Tampa in record time (under two hours – sorry, Mom), and were able to talk with Mr. Acuff one-on-one.
If you don’ t already know this guy, you have to check him out. http://www.jonacuff.com/stuffchristianslike/ He is touring with his new book “Start” and you can find a free sample of the book at the link.
Mr. Acuff gave us posters, gave me a copy of “Start” (autographed, of course), and signed not only Christine’s book, but her notebook containing the first draft of her own manuscript, an 80K word thriller, which starts on the day before the Apocalypse (it may include zombies, too!). It was pretty awesome. He even tweeted us a thank you message for trekking all that way.
If you head over to Christine’s blog (http://christinedwards.blogspot.com/) she will be posting her story and how it overlaps with Mr. Acuff’s, when she discovered his work while she was deployed in Afghanistan. It’s pretty inspiring. You have to check it out. And if you really want to read something funny, ask her about the story she wrote and hand-delivered to John Acuff about two girls who stalk a famous writer on a cross-state trek, manuscripts in tow, hoping to get discovered. I swear, it’s just a coincidence!
What did we take from this trip? There are people who make it, and they are real. They are the ones who never give up, and the ones who understand that the more people you help along the way, the farther up the ladder you get pushed.
Thanks, John, for a wonderful memory and for taking the time to inspire two groupies!
