First Southeast Speculative Fiction Conference is a huge success!
Authors who write speculative fiction—science fiction, fantasy, horror, and all the blends—gathered in Maitland, Florida in late September to experience an inexpensive, highly productive weekend of classes, presentations, and connections. The first annual SF:SE 2015 Conference was presented by Rachel Litt, Founder and Director of Dirty Little Bookers, who served as Conference Director. “We want to surprise and educate, to bulldoze the wall between traditional and indie (publishers),” shared Litt. “I’ve never been so happy to work so hard in my life.”
Sci-fi great and the author of The Ender Saga, Orson Scott Card, flew in to present a three-hour workshop to eager authors. He tackled writing misconceptions, critiquing, and story creation.
“Orson Scott Card’s presentation at SF:SE 2015 was eye opening,” shared LE Perez, author of Beauty of Fear. “He basically took all of the writing rules I had tried to always keep in mind and threw them out.”
Award-winning author Jaimie M. Engle presented at the SF:SE 2015 Conference. “This conference was amazing. It was completely affordable, filled with awesome workshops, and I was able to not only meet Orson Scott Card, one of my top three favorite authors, but to autograph a copy of my own book, Clifton Chase and the Arrow of Light, for him.” Engle was awarded honorable mentions in the L. Ron Hubbard’s Writer’s of the Future contest in 2013.
Christine Edwards also attended the conference. A freelance writer, and an editor with A Writer For Life, Edwards is shopping her first speculative fiction novel. “It’s rare to find to find a writing class these days that isn’t rehashing the same surface level tips that we’ve all heard before. I learned more in Card’s class than I did in the last two conferences I’ve attended combined.” Dirty Little Bookers plans to host an even bigger and better conference next year for speculative fiction authors.
